Men:Serve
At Houston’s First, Flourish is a Care Group devoted to supporting widows as they navigate a new and often difficult season of life. Many women find themselves facing responsibilities that were once shared with or handled by their spouse - maintaining a home, caring for the yard, managing repairs, and managing countless everyday tasks alone. Along with these practical challenges often come feelings of grief, uncertainty, and isolation.
Because no one should walk through this journey alone, the Men’s Ministry has partnered with Pastoral Care to provide both encouragement and practical support for these ladies. Scripture consistently reminds us of the importance of caring for widows, from Exodus 22:22 to James 1:27. As men called to lead through serving, the Band of Brothers mobilizes teams from across Houston to serve the widows of our church with compassion, humility, and joy.
On six Saturdays throughout the year, the Men’s Ministry assists widows with “honey-do” projects around their homes. Whether helping with yard work, repairs, maintenance, or other household needs, these men come ready to serve with a Christlike attitude and a joyful spirit. Their goal is not simply to complete tasks, but to reflect the love and care of Christ in a meaningful and personal way.
Nearly 150 men serve at each event, and over the past decade, more than 250 widows have been helped through this ministry. Yet beyond the projects completed, one of the greatest blessings has been the relationships formed along the way. Teams take time to get to know each widow, pray for her needs, and offer encouragement. Many women have shared that it was the first time since their loss that they truly felt loved, supported, and cared for by their church family.
James 1:27 (CSB)
Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
